Filipina sports icon Lydia De Vega Mercado passed away on Wednesday, August 10. She was 57.
The news was confirmed by her daughter Stephanie via a Facebook post on Wednesday evening.
"She fought the very good fight and is now at peace."
Stephanie also said that details for the wake and funeral of de Vega will be released soon. She asked everyone for prayers for the soul of her mother.
Lydia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018. In July 2022, her daughter Stephanie also revealed that her mother underwent brain surgery.
De Vega was known as Asia's Fastest Woman in the 80s' having held the Asian record for 8 years from 1982-1990.
She also still holds the SEA Games record for 100-meter dash which she set in 1987.
